Al Kamil negotiated a ten-year peace
2020-02-18 Tue
Al Kamil was a Muslim ruler and the fourth Ayyubid Sultan who ruled Egypt, Palestine, and Syria during the Fifth and Sixth crusades. On his accession to the sultanate, al-Kamil engaged the armies of the Fifth Crusade and eventually negotiated their withdrawal from Egypt in 1221. During this conflict, he had an interview with St. Francis of Assisi, who wished to convert him to Christianity.
Today on 18th February 1229 al-Kamil negotiated a ten-year peace with Frederick II and returned Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Bethlehem to the Crusader kingdom. The treaty of 1229 is unique in the history of the Crusades. An exception was made for the Temple area, the Dome of the Rock, and the Aqsa Mosque, which the Muslims retained.
Depicted here is a gold Dinar issued under his reign from Al-Qahira mint. The obverse of a coin depicts Al-Malik Kamil Nasir Al Dunia Waaldin Muhammad Ibn Abu Bakr. On the other hand, the reverse of a coin engraved Al Imam Al Nasir Li Din Allah Amir Al Muminin Ahmad.
