1935 Soviet Union Levanevsky stamp

In 1935 a Sigismund Levanevsky stamp with commemorative red overprint, ‘Moscow- San Francisco Flight via the north pole’ was issued. In record only two sheets approx 50 stamps of inverted surcharge were printed in which 40 were with regular overprint and 10 with small ‘f’.According to the legend, this inverted surcharge was not an error of the topography but was printed on the special instructing on Henry Yagoda. It was said that Mr. Yagoda was fond of Philately and wanted to have a real collection of rare philatelic stamp including the error stamps.
One of the Levanevsky surcharge overprint stamps was sold for 525,000 US dollars at the Cherrystone auction in 2008.
