The Death Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi Observed in Spain

Founded by a Spanish poet, January 30 is a special observance in Spain. It's School Day of Non-violence and Peace or Dia Escolar de la No-Violencia i la Pau in Spanish. School Day of Non-violence and Peace is celebrated on January 30, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

This observance was introduced by Llorenc Vidal Vida, Spanish poet, and pacifist, in Majorca in 1964. The observance is not similar to proposed by UNESCO Armistice Day in 1948. It supports for pacifying and non-violent permanent education, putting emphasis on love and friendship that are above all.

School Day of Non-violence and Peace has its own permanent message that is taught to every child: “Universal love, non-violence, and peace. Universal love is better than egoism, non-violence is better than violence, and peace is better than war”. Every year the slogan of the observance may be changed, but the message is kept the same.

In the year 2019, Spanish Post issued a special commemorative stamp on the 150th birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. This colorful stamp comes with the denominating of 1 Euro and depicts the smiling portrait of Gandhi with the Indian Nationa Flag on the background. Gandhiji is surrounded by ladies in colorful sarees.
