O.P.Nayyar - The Rhythm King

Celebrated as Asia’s “Rhythm King”, Omkar Prasad Nayyar also known as O.P. Nayyar passed away on 28th January 2007. He is considered to be one of the most rhythmic and melodious music directors of the Hindi film industry.

The creator of the timeless classic, his immortal melodies have always ironed the creases of our stressed lives. OP Nayyar remains the only composer who reached the top without recording a single song in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar.

O P Nayyar was born in 1926 in Lahore and got his first break as a composer in 1949 in the film Kaneez. Three years later, D Pancholi gave Nayyar his debut film, Aasmaan (1952), for which he composed the Geeta Dutt beauty Dekho jadoo bhare more nain.

Some of Nayyar’s famous numbers were ‘Babuji Dheere Chalna’, ‘Pukarta Chala Hoon Mein’, ‘Kahin Pe Nigahein Kahin Pe Nishana’ etc. He won the 1958 Filmfare Award for Best Music Director (for Naya Daur).

To honor him India Postal Department has issued a 500 Paise commemorative postage stamp in 2013.
