The Nawab of Bengal was the Shia Muslim of Bengal; they were the rulers of the provinces of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. Between 1717 and 1765; they ruled as Subah of Bengal with their capital as Murshidabad. However, they were subordinate to the Mughal Empire.Murshid Quil Khan was the first Nizam cum Diwan of Bengal. Murshid Khan was appointed the "Nawab Nizam of Bengal" and he emerged as the ruler of Bengal under the Mughals. Before the arrival of Murshid Quil Khan, there were four Diwans in Bengal. After his arrival, Azim-ush-Shan got in conflict with Murshid Quil Khan over some financial issued. After complaining of Khan to Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb; Aurangzeb asks Azim-ush-Khan to move to Bihar. After the departure of Azim-ush-Khan to Bihar to two posts united in one and Murshid Quli Khan became the first Nizam cum Diwan of Bengal. In this way Murshid Khan was appointed the "Nawab Nizam of Bengal" and he emerged as the ruler of Bengal under the Mughals.
This silver rupee which weighs around 11.45g was issued from the Independent Kingdom Nawab of Bengal. This silver rupee was issued in the name of Mughal Emperor Alamgir II, in the Hijri Year 171 during the 5th year of this reign.
