Kyrgyzstan, officially known as the the Kyrgyz Republic, is a country in Central Asia. Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country with a mountainous terrain. It is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west and southwest, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east.

Kyrgyzstan is ranked 78th among countries for economic freedom. The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic serves as the Central bank of Kyrgyzstan. The som is the currency of the Kyrgyz Republic. The word som means "pure" and the word implies "pure gold".

On 10 May 1993, the government issued 1, 10 and 50 tyiyn notes and the Kyrgyzstan Bank issued notes for 1, 5 and 20 som. Today we are looking at a 5 Som banknote issued in 1994. The note specifications are as follows:

The obverse depicts a portrait of Bubusara Beishenalieva - one of the founders of the Kyrgyz ballet to right. The reverse features the Kyrgyz State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. This note has portraits of Akyn (poet) and singer Toktogul Satylganov as its watermark.
