Hasan Ibn Zayd also referred to as Al-Dai al-Kabir "the Great/Elder Missionary" was an Alid who became the founder of the Zaydi dynasty of Tabaristan. Al Hasan was a descended of a great-grandson of Ali, the fourth Khalifah-e-Rashidun and son-in-law of Muhammad. In 864, he was living at Rayy in northern Iran, when he was invited by pro-Alid elements in the neighboring province of Tabaristan to join them in an uprising against the Abbasid authorities. Despite the rapid success of the rebellion, Hasan's reign was troubled due to repeated invasions, and he was several times forced to seek refuge in Daylam. Hasan died at Amul on 6th January 884 and was succeeded by his brother Muhammad ibn Zayd.
The above shown silver Dirham was issued under his reign from Jurjan mint. The obverse of a coin depicts ‘La Ilaha Illallahu Wahdahu La Sharikalahu’. On the other hand, the reverse of a coin engraved ‘Allah Muhammadur Rasulullah’.
