The first stamps of the USSR appeared in August 1923 as a series of Soviet Union postage stamps. Designed by the Russian artist Georgy Pashkov, the stamps were issued to commemorate The First All-Russian Agricultural and Handicraft Exhibition held in Moscow in the year 1923.

The stamps have the inscription in Russian: "CCCP" ("USSR") of Post of the USSR, the value, and the words in Russian which read All-Russian Agricultural and Handicraft Exhibition. The four designs feature Allegory of Reaping, Allegory of Sowing, Fordson Tractor and Allegory of the Exhibition.

The stamp shown above is the allegorical representation of Reaping. The stamp shows Peasant with a sickle and a sheaf standing on the background of a rising sun representing the emergence of a new nation.
