Death Anniversary of M. G. Ramachandran

Ramachandran was an actor-turned-politician, was popularly known as MGR among his followers. He had an extensive career mainly in Tamil language film. He was the first popular Indian actor to serve as Chief Minister for three consecutive terms never having lost an election, till he breathed his last on December 24, 1987.

M.G.R. was born on 17th January 1917, in Kandy, Ceylon, to a Melakkath Gopalan Menon and Maruthur Satyabhama. Well known as “Makkal Thilagam” (People’s King), Ramchandran was a philanthropist and a humanitarian icon.

His achievements in 3 fields, namely films, philanthropy, and politics were remarkable. The Government of India honored him with the highest civilian award, The Bharat Ratna for his unparalleled public service. To tribute this cultural idol of Tamil Nadu, India Postal Department has issued two commemorative postage stamp in the year 1990 and 2017. Both stamps depict his portrait in foreground.
