The first indigenous tank of the Indian Army: Vijayanta

Today on12 December 1965, Vijayanta “Victorious”, first indigenous military tank which was handed over to the Army, was manufactured at Avadi Heavy Vehicles Factory at Madras. It was the main battle tank built in India based on a licensed design of the Vickers Mk.1.

The first battle test occurred in the war of 1971, the Bangladesh Liberation War. This gigantic 39,000kg army tank served in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 and served the Indian Army from 1965 till 2008. Vijayanta was originally manufactured by Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd, a British Company. Later on, the production was done in India.

A 25 Paise commemorative stamp was issued on 4th March 1976 honoring the 16th Light Cavalry and featuring the battle tank Vijayanta.
