Constituent Assembly of India meets for the first time

9th December 1946 is the day when the Constituent Assembly of India met for the first time in Constitutional Hall, New Delhi which is now known as the Central Hall of Parliament House. It was attended by 205 members under the chairmanship of Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha; including 9 women. In the first meeting, the assembly adopted an ‘Objective Resolution’ which later became the preamble of the constitution.

Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha was elected the Interim president of the Constituent Assembly. He was one of the eminent and noted parliamentarian, educationalist, lawyer and journalist of India. A spirit of rationalism and nationalism pervaded all his political and social reform activities. He endeared himself to the people all the more by his boldness, impartiality and hardwork.

To honor him India Postal Department has issued a 500 Paise commemorative postage stamp on 26th December, 2016.
