The Maukharis

The Maukharis were the Indian dynasty that came to power after the downfall of the Gupta Empire in the 6th century. Before coming to the power they had also served as a vessel of the Gupta Empire, the Harsha knew as Harshavardhana an Indian emperor of the Vardhana dynasty who had ruled North India from 606 to 647 CE.

The Maukharis had established their independence at Kanyakubja (modern-day Kannauj city) during the 6th Century; this dynasty had also ruled over Uttar Pradesh and Magadha. The inscription from various other places states that the family of Maukharis had many branches. The Maukharis had ruled either as chief or a feudatory of the Gupta Empire from northern India, but amongst their entire most important region was Kanyakubja.

This silver Drachma was issued by king Avantivarman from the Maukharis dynasty. The obverse of this coin depicts the bust of king facing towards left with the crescent above. The reverse of this coin depicts peacock facing towards right and the legend ‘Vijitavanir Avanapati Sri Avantivarman Divam Jayati.
