India Post on Badrinath Temple
2019-12-07 Sat
Badrinath or Badrinarayan Temple is one of the four sites in India’s Char Dham pilgrimage and most visited temple of India. It is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand alongside the Alaknanda River. It has got its name from the ‘Badri Tree’ under which Lord Vishnu was believed to have meditated, oblivious of the extreme weather conditions of the place. The temple has a glorious historic significance as its name is mentioned in ancient religious texts. The temple is approximately 50 ft (15 m) tall with a small cupola on top, covered with a gold gilt roof. The facade is built of stone, with arched windows. A broad stairway leads up to a tall arched gateway, which is the main entrance. The architecture resembles a Buddhist vihara (temple), with the brightly painted facade also more typical of Buddhist temples. Just inside is the mandapa, a large pillared hall that leads to the garbha griha, or main shrine area. The walls and pillars of the mandapa are covered with intricate carving.
On 29th November 2019, India Postal Department has issued a 15 Rupees commemorative postage stamp on beautiful Badrinath Temple.
