Argentina is a massive South American nation which has a terrain that encompasses the Andes Mountains, glacial lakes and Pampas’s grassland, the traditional grazing ground of its famed beef cattle. The country is famous for tango dance and music. Its big, cosmopolitan capital, Buenos Aires, is centred on the Plaza de Mayo, lined with stately 19th-century buildings including Casa Rosada, the iconic, balconied presidential palace.

The peso is the currency of Argentina, and it is subdivided into 100 centavos. In 1992, banknotes were introduced in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 pesos.

Today we are looking at a 5000 Pesos banknote in issue from 1962 to 1969. The obverse has the portrait of General Jose Francisco de San Martin to right; Argentinian Coat of Arms to centre top. The reverse has Argentine National Congress Palace in Buenos Aires.

This brown note has General San Martin as its watermark.
