The Gonds were originally Telugu speaking people belonging to Central India. It is believed that the word Gond is derived from the Telugu word Konda which means hills.

During the medieval period in the 15th Century, the Gond was divided among several states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. For almost four centuries the Gonds Kindom had ruled almost the entire hilly region of central India; including parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha in Maharashtra. In Madhya Pradesh, the Gonds were the small but, the most powerful kingdom.

This copper paisa which weighs around 5.09 g was issued by Kok Shah of Gonds of Devagadh Kingdom. The obverse of this coin is inscribed with Nagari legend Sivabhakta Sri Maharaja Jat (abaji Suta Devagadha) and dagger in the center. The reverse of this coin depicts Maharaja Kokasahi Mahipatirava and date.
