Silver Tanka of Gujarat Sultan Shams Al-Din Muzaffar II

Shams Al-Din Muzaffar II was sultan of Muzaffarid dynasty. He ruled Gujarat from 1511 CE until 1526 CE. He was the eldest son of Sultan Mahmud Begada and his Rajput wife, Rani Hírabai.

The real name of Muzaffar II was Khalil Khan, He sat on the throne of Gujarat Sultanate after succeeding his father under the title Shams Al-Din Muzaffar II.

Shams-Al-Din Muzaffar II issued coins in gold, silver, copper, and billon. Gold coins issued by him were struck for a longer period. His gold coin weighs around 11.4-11.6g, but some of his dateless coins are also found which weighs around 12.6g. Billon coin issued by him was struck for a short time. Copper coins issued by him weighs around 11-11.2g, but some of his copper coin with weight 9.2-9.4g and 8.3g are also found.

This silver rupee was issued which weighs around 7.0g was issued by Shams Al-Din Muzaffar II from the mint Burhanpur. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Al-Mu’ayyad Bi-Tayid Al-Rahman Shams Al-Dunya wa’l Din Abul Nasr. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Al-Sultan Muzaffar Shah Burhanpur.
