Libius Severus also known as Severus III was Western Roman Emperor reigning from 461 to 465 AD. Today on 19th November 461, he was elected emperor by the Roman Senate in Revanna. He was unable to solve the many problems affecting the empire. The source describes him as a pious Christian.Severus was one of the last Western emperors, emptied of any effective power (the real power was in the hands of the magister militum Ricimer). Severus had to face several problems during his reign, because of the presence of Ricimer and because his rule was not recognized in several provinces.
Depicted here is a gold tremissis issued under his reign from Milan mint. The obverse of a coin depicts the pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Libius Severus. The reverse of a coin engraved Cross within wreath terminating in large jewel; COMOB below.
