Birth Anniversary of Marie Curie

Marie Curie, The Polish born French physicist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity was born on 7th November, 1867. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and she is the only woman to win the award in two different fields. She was also the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris.

Marie was born in Warsaw, Poland, to a family of teachers who believed strongly in education. She moved to Paris to continue her studies and there met Pierre Curie, who became both her husband and colleague in the field of radioactivity. The couple later shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics.

In 1911 she received a second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry, in recognition of her work in radioactivity. She occupies an eminent position amongst the great scientist of the world.

India Postal Department has issued a 20 Paise commemorative stamps to celebrate the birth centenary of Madam Curie. The design of the stamp is horizontal. It depicts at left side a block in which a patient is shown being given a Radium treatment. A portrait of Marie Curie engraved at the right side portion of the stamp.
