Kanaka Dasa

Kanaka Das was a mystic saint and singer from Karnataka. Born as Thimmappa Nayaka, he belonged to a chieftain family of Kaginele in the Haveri district. His father was a Danayaka (Army Chief) who controlled 78 villages.

A born poet, he composed a number of poems ranging from the ornate; Mohanatarangini’ and the immensely popular ‘Nala Charitra’. His teaching reached every heart and every home on the wings of music.

Every year, the Birth Anniversary of this great poet and saint is celebrated as Kanakadasa Jayanti by people of Karnataka in general and Kuruba Gowda community in particular. To tribute him, the Government of Karnataka has declared the birthday of Kanaka Dasa as a state holiday.

To honor him India Postal Department has issued a commemorative postage stamp of 100 Paise. It depicts the Saint Poet in the fore-ground with the Udupi Temple in the background.
