2019-11-04 Mon

Jersey Post celebrates the 200th birth anniversary of George Eliot – one of the most important writers of the 19th century – with a set of six stamps. These stamps show bright paintings of Jersey created by Peter Fancourt according to description taken the writer’s journal and letter created in the summer 1857. A quote from Eliot has also incorporated into each of the designs.

Mary Ann Evans was writing under the pseudonym of George Eliot. She was a highly praised and acclaimed Victorian writer. She is best remembering writing classic books like Middlemarch and Silas Marner. Fans of her work include Queen Victorian herself and even today her novels entertain and delight readers. Mary visited jersey with her partner George Lewes; she quotes her fond memory of Jersey as ‘A sweet spot in our memories, while our memories last’.
