The United States of America had issued this silver half dollar commemorative coin with the theme of Lynchburg in the year 1936. Lynchburg is the city situated in Virginia towards the east of Blue Rigid Mountains. This commemorative coin was issued by the United States of America to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of Lynchburg.

Lynchburg lies at the center of a wider metropolitan area which is very close to the geographical center of Virginia. Lynchburg has several institutions for higher education which include the Virginia University of Lynchburg, University of Lynchburg, Randolph College, and Liberty University. Nearby cities include Roanoke, Charlottesville, and Danville.
br> The obverse of this silver half dollar depicts the bust of Senator Carter Glass facing towards left. Senator Carter Glass was a democratic Politian from Lynchburg. He had represented Virginia in both houses of Congress and served as the United States Secretary of the Treasury under President Woodrow Wilson. The reverse of this coin depicts a standing figure of Liberty and an image of the Lynchburg courthouse.
