Rumi Darwaza

The Rumi Darwaza, an incredible structure that stands imposingly 60 feet high was constructed during the reign of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784-86. It is a fine example of Awadhi architecture or the Lucknow School of Architecture.

The Rumi Darwaza is also known by the name of the Turkish Gateway since it is supposed to be identical in design to a similar gateway in ancient Constantinople. Situated between Bada Imambara and Chota Imambara it becomes a logo for the city of Lucknow. It is a huge ornate structure, marked by an eight faceted chhatri in its uppermost part. In earlier times it was used to mark the entrance to the Old Lucknow City.

India Postal Department has issued a 5 Rupee commemorative postal stamp featuring this beautiful giant gate which enhancing the beauty of Lucknow city.
