Today on this day in the year 473 Emperor Leo I acclaim his grandson Leo II as Caesar of the East Roman Empire.Leo II was born in 467 to Zeno, an Isaurian general under Leo I, and Ariadne, the daughter of the emperor Leo I. Leo II was made co-emperor alongside his grandfather Leo I. He was also appointed as the sole consul. When Leo I died of dysentery, Leo II ascended the throne.
The above shown gold Solidus was issued from Constantinople. It depicts the pearl-diademed, helmeted, cuirassed bust of Leo I facing, head slightly right, spear in right hand over the shoulder, shield decorated with horseman motif on left. The reverse of a coin engraved Leo I and Leo II nimbate seated facing on double throne with curved arms; star above, cross between their heads, CONOB in exergue.
