Chulalongkorn Memorial Day in Thailand

Celebrated on 23rd October every year, Chulalongkorn Memorial Day is an important holiday that gives Thai citizens an opportunity to pay respect to King Chulalongkorn. King Chulalongkorn revitalized Thailand for the 20th century. He was loved due to his progressive policies and diplomatic measures. Chulalongkorn Memorial Day celebrates his life and accomplishments.Chulalongkorn was born into the House of Chakri as the son of King Rama IV. As a child, Chulalongkorn held a position in the royal court of Siam. Along with this political experience, Thailand’s most beloved leader learned much through formal schooling. As a student, he studied biology, swordsmanship, engineering, English, and anthropology.
This able king brought several changes into the kingdom such as Economic reform, Abolition of slavery and the corvee system and the Implementation of western values. Hence, 23 October of every year is a national holiday in Thailand as it marks “King Chulalongkorn Day" or known in Thai as "Wan Piyamaharaj Day". It is the memorial day of the passing away of King Chulalongkorn, otherwise known as King Rama V.
Thai Post issued a 5 Thai baht stamp on 4th April 1982 to commemorate Bicentenary of the Chakri Dynasty and of Bangkok. The stamp shows a standing portrait of the king along with the beautiful landscape of Siamese Palaces in the background. The name of the country and the denomination value is inscribed at the bottom.
