The United States of America has issued this silver commemorative half dollar with the theme of Roanoke Island. The meaning of the word Roanoke is ‘white beads made from Shells’ or "things rubbed smooth by hand".

Roanoke Island is situated in the Dare County on the outer bank of North Carolina, United States. This island is named after historical Roanoke Carolina Algonquian people who were inhabited in this region during the 16th Century. The residence of Roanoke Island is governed by the Dare Country Board of Commissioners.

The obverse of this coin depicts the portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh. The reverse of this coin depicts women and her child with two sailing ships and a pine branch.
