Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster Remembered on Ukrainian Coins

The 10th Anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster was observed by Ukraine with the release of two commemorative coins - an Uncirculated copper-nickel 200,000- karbovanet coin and a Proof .925 fine silver 2,000,000-karbovanet coin, in 1996.

Chernobyl nuclear disaster took place on 26th April 1986 when an explosion released large quantities of radioactive particles which spread throughout western USSR and Europe. This is considered to be the world’s worst nuclear disaster.

The reason behind this disaster was a flawed reactor design and untrained personnel. The accident resulted in the death of 31 operators and firemen within three months and several further deaths later. Forests and wildlife has also been affected majorly. Research continues to find out the long-term ecological impact.
