World Rabies Day

2019-09-28 Sat

World Rabies Day that takes place each year on September 28 commemorates the anniversary of the death of Louis Pasteur who, with the collaboration of his colleagues, developed the first efficacious rabies vaccine.

World Rabies Day is an international awareness campaign coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control. Rabies Day aims to raise awareness about the impact of rabies in humans and animals, provide information and advice on how to prevent the disease in at-risk communities, and support advocacy for increased efforts in rabies control.

A special cove was released to celebrate World Rabies Day on 28th September 2018 at Bengaluru. The cover was issued in collaboration with the Department of Health and Family Welfare. The cover depicts an illustration on the left which shows a young boy, a woman and a dog with the message “Rabies: Share the Message: Save a life” in Kannada, Hindi, and English.

The cover is attached with a stamp issued to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi. The stamp is canceled by a special cancellation mark showing the faces of a dog and a child with the lettering “World Rabies Day” and “September 18”.
