Birth Anniversary of Ramdhari Singh Dinkar

One of the most important modern Hindi poets, Ramdhari Singh was born on 23rd September 1908. He emerged as a poet of rebellion as a result of his nationalist poetry written in the days before Indian independence. On the account of his inspiring patriotic compositions, he was called “Rashtrakavi” (national poet).He had a distinguished academic career as a professor of Hindi literature. During the emergency period. He was also a close aide of Jayaprakash Narayan. His epic poetic composition Kurukshetra, Rashmirathi, Neel Kusum, etc. won the hearts of the people.
His works received wide recognition and numerous awards, including the national award “Padma Bhushan”. As an excellent prose writer, he received the Sahitya Academy Award for his work “Sanskrit Ke Char Adhayaya” in 1959. Besides this, his verse play Urvashi was honored with the Jnanpith Award in 1972.
In 1999, Dinkar was one of the Hindi writers featured on a set of commemorative postal stamps issued by India Postal Department to celebrate the "Linguistic Harmony of India" marking the 50th anniversary since the Indian Union adopted Hindi as its official language.
