Oil Workers' Day of Azerbaijan

On September 20 Azerbaijan celebrates the Oil Workers Day, which marks the anniversary of the signing of the ACG production sharing agreement.Since that time the developments in oil and gas industry of the country made Azerbaijan one of the focal points of the global energy market. Projects and operations, currently performed in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian, have turned the region into one of the important world’s hydrocarbon provinces.
The contract, also known as the Contract of the Century due to its tremendous importance, became the first offshore PSA agreement of the country. It covered the development of three major oil fields in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea. As many as 13 companies representing eight countries, Azerbaijan, the USA, Great Britain, Russia, Turkey, Norway, Japan, and Saudi Arabia participated in the Contract of the Century.
Hence, September 20 is marked as the Day of Oil Workers in Azerbaijan, under a decree signed by President Heydar Aliyev. The stamp shown above depicts an oil field in Azerbaijan. Issued in the year 1921, this stamp is one of the earliest stamps of the country.
The stamp depicts an oil well in the centre with the national symbol of the country (a hammer and a dagger inside a crescent) with the denomination value in Arabic and Azerbaijani. The stamp comes with the denomination of 2 Russian rubles and inscribed with the name of the country on top and bottom in Arabic and Azerbaijani respectively.
