Nasir Al-Din Mahmud Shah I was the Sultan of Gujarat, he ruled sat on the throne of Gujarat Sultanate in the year 1458 CE and ruled it till 1511 CE. He issued coins is large quantity in all three metals gold, silver, and copper, few billion coins struck by him are also found.Nasir Al-Din Mahmud Shah I had also got the title ‘Begada’; ‘Be’ means Two and ‘Gada’ means Fort. Hence the word ‘Begada’ means master of two impregnable forts - Champaner and Junagadh.
These silver heavy tanka issued by Nasir Al-Din Mahmud Shah minted in Muhammadabad in the Hirji year 903 weighs around 11.13g. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Al-Sultan Al-Azam Nasir Al-Dunya Wa’l Din Abul Fath’. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Al-Sultan Mahmud Shah’.
