2019-09-09 Mon
Pobjoy Mint released new coins for the British Virgin Islands to mark the 80th anniversary of World War II and honour the strong relationship between America and Britain during the war. The reverse design is based on an old poster design. America is symbolised by Uncle Sam and an eagle, while Great Britain is represented by depicting Britannia, holding a shield and trident with a lion. Other inscriptions on the reverse side include the texts “World War II” and denominational value. The obverse side depicts an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II that’s exclusively designed by Pobjoy Mint. The .925 Sterling Silver version has a mintage limit of 2,000 pieces while the Cupro-Nickel version has a mintage limit of 10,000 pieces. Both versions weigh 28.28 grams and have a diameter of 38.60 millimetres. The Sterling Silver coin comes in an acrylic capsule which is further housed in a red box along with a Certificate of Authenticity. The Uncirculated Cupro Nickel Coins are available in tubes.World War II officially began in 1939 and went on until 1945. More than 100 million people from over 30 nations fought the war. America was responsible for defending the Caribbean. The USA and Great Britain signed the Lend-Lease Agreement or Bases-for-Destroyers Agreement in September 1940. 11 US military bases were established in the Caribbean region after the agreement was signed. Caribbean was turned into a coastal frontier by Franklin D Roosevelt. Uncle Sam personified the American government and was used for messaging and promotions extensively for the first time during the 1812 War.
