Ghiyath Al-Din Ahmed Shah III was the sultan of Muzaffarid dynasty who had ruled Gujarat during the medieval period in India. This dynasty was founded by Zafar Khan; who was the governor of Gujarat under Delhi Sultanate. This dynasty is also referred to as Ahmadabad dynasty, was the sultan of Gujarat in western India from 1391 till 1583. Zafar Khan was a son of Sadharan, a Hindu Rajput, who was later converted into Islam and adopted the name Wajih-ul-Mulk. Firuz Shah Tughluq had god married to the sister of Wajih-ul-Mulk and in this way, Wajih –ul-Mulk entered in the court of Tughluq Dynasty. When Tughluq dynasty got weakened due to by the sack of Timur in the year 1398, Ahmed Shah took the advantage of this establish himself as Independent sultan of Gujarat.Ghiyath Al-Din Ahmed Shah III sat on the throne of Gujarat Sultanate in the year 1553 CE and ruled it till 1560. After sitting on the throne of Gujarat Sultanate he established his capital at Ahmadabad.
This gold tanka which weighs around 11.91g was issued by Ghiyath Al-Din Ahmed Shah III in the Hijri Year 951. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Ahmad Shah Bin Mahmud Shah Al-Sultan 'Umr’. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Al-Mutasim Billah Al-Rahman Ghiyath Al-Dunya Wa 'l Din Abul Muhamid’.
