7th September 1925 is a day when, the first female superstar of Telugu cinema, Bhanumathi Ramakrishna was born. Fondly known as ‘Ashtavadani’, meaning someone who can perform 8 tasks simultaneously, Bhanumathi Ramkrishna was a multi-talented actress. She was a writer, actor, director, producer, singer, music director, editor and studio owner.Bhanumati was born in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh. She entered the film industry in 1939 and acted in over 200 films in Telugu and Tamil.
For her contribution in Indian cinema, she was bestowed with various prestigious awards and honors such as Padma Shree in 1966 and Padma Bhushan in 2001 through this she becomes the first south Indian actress to receive Padma Awards. She also got National Wards (Rashtrapati Award). She is the last actress to receive the Rashtrapati Award. Besides this, she was also honored with Government National Award for Best Writer for the book "Nalo Nenu" an autobiography in 1994.
In 2013, India Postal Department has issued 500 Paise (5 Rupees) commemorative postage stamp.
