Rhodesia was an unrecognised state in southern Africa from 1965 to 1979, equivalent in territory to modern Zimbabwe. Rhodesia was the de facto successor state to the British colony of Southern Rhodesia, which had been a self-governing “country” since achieving responsible government in 1923. Today the country is called as Zimbabwe. The dollar was the currency of Rhodesia between 1970 and 1980. It was subdivided into 100 cents. On 17 February 1970, the Reserve bank of Rhodesia introduced notes in denominations of 1, 2 and 10 dollars. 5 dollar notes were added in 1972.
We are discussing a 5 Dollar banknote in issue from 1972 to 1979. The obverse depicts Giraffe to extreme left; Bank logo with Chiremba Balancing Rocks at Epworth in centre; and the State Coat of Arms depicting two sable antelopes to right. The reverse features two lions.
