Peru is a country in South America that's home to a section of Amazon rainforest. It is famous for the Machu Picchu, an ancient Incan city high in the Andes Mountains. The region around Machu Picchu, including the Sacred Valley, Inca Trail and colonial city of Cusco, is rich in archaeological sites. On Peru’s arid Pacific coast in Lima lays the country’s capital, with a preserved colonial centre and important collections of pre-Columbian art.Peruvian sol was the currency of Peru between 1863 and 1985. It was subdivided into 10 dineros or 100 centavos. The banknote depicted in the image beside is 5 Soles de Oro Banknote of 1974. The note specifications are as follows:
The obverse depicts artifacts to left; and Inca Pachacutec the ninth Sapa Inca of the Kingdom of Cusco. He is said to have transformed Cusco into the Inca Empire and also believed to have built/commissioned the famous Inca site of Machu Picchu. The reverse features Fortress - Fortaleza de Sacsahuaman.
