History of Surat

Surat is the city situated in Indian states of Gujarat. It is also used as the largest sea-port and the center for diamond cutting and polishing. This city is well known as the Diamond City of India; due to its diamond cutting, polishing and export.Surat is believed to be founded by Brahmin named Gopi, who named this city as Surajpur or Suryapur. In the year 1573, this city came under the control of the Mughal Empire. Surat was one of the populous city during the Mughal era. It was the city with the largest transient population. In the year 1612 England had established the first Indian factory in Surat. Later; in the year 1664, this mughal port was sacked twice by Maratha king Shivaji Maharaj.
This gold mohur was issued by Mughal ruler Aurangzeb from the mint Surat during 46h year of this reign. The obverse of this coin is inscribed with the name and title of the king Aurangzeb with the regnal year 1114. The reverse of this coin is inscribed with the mint name Surat with the regnal year 46.
