Independence Day in the Republic of Niger is commemorated on August 3, marking the nation's independence from France in 1960.The Republic of the Niger is country in West Africa named after the Niger River. In the 19th century, contact with Europe began with the first European explorers traveled to Niger. Following the 1885 Berlin conference, Niger became one of the French colonies in West Africa. French military expeditions met great resistance from several ethnic groups.
The end of the colonial era was characterized by a transformation of the political environment in French West Africa and Niger. The Nigerien Progressive Party, the Nigerien section of the African Democratic Rally Party, founded in May 1946.
By the end of the year 1958, Niger became an autonomous state within the French Community, as the Republic of Niger was established. On 11 July 1960, Niger decided to leave the French Community and acquired full independence on 3 August 1960 with Diori as its first president.
The 25th Anniversary of the Independence of Niger was celebrated with a special commemorative stamp. Issued on 3rd August 1985, the stamp comes with the denomination 110 West African CFA francs and depicts the Coat of Arms of the country along with the crops of the country.
