July 29 marks the 115th birth anniversary of Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, the father of Indian aviation and a hero of Indian business. Better known as J.R.D. Tata, he made Tata Group one of the most prestigious and successful industrial groups in India.Born in the year 1904 in France to an Indian father and a French mother, Tata had an idyllic childhood. He began his career as an unpaid apprentice in the Indian company Tata and Sons. Within few years he rose to the position of the company’s Chairman.
He was interested in flying planes at a young age. He became the first person to obtain the first-ever issued pilot license in India. Later, he took his passion for flying to another level by establishing India’s first commercial airline, Tata Airlines which later became Air India. But that was only one of many path-breaking achievements of JRD, who guided the destiny of the Tata group for more than half a century.
Under his leadership and direction, the Tata Group expanded into newer horizons and became one of India’s most trusted brands. This great personality passed away on 29th November 1993. He received two of India's highest civilian awards the Padma Vibhushan and the Bharat Ratna.
He was a fearless and visionary aviator ahead of his times. To honor him India Postal Department has issued a commemorative stamp in 1994 of 200 Paise.
We should take inspiration from him. So keep working hard and never give up!
