National Thai Language Day
2020-07-29 Wed
The day of 29th July is observed every year in Thailand as National Thai Language Day or Wan Paa-Saa Tai Haeng Chaad in Thai.It was established in 1999 as a way to raise awareness of the proper use of the Thai language and the preservation of unique local dialects. The language is actually regulated by the Royal Institute of Thailand and Standard Thai is the variety spoken by educated classes in Bangkok, the capitol.
July 29 was picked as National Thai Language Day to commemorate His Majesty the King’s private visit to Chulalongkorn University to join experts on the Thai language in a discussion on problems with using Thai words. The discussion took place on 29 July 1962 at the Faculty of Arts where His Majesty emphasized the importance of using correct pronunciations and local dialects.
Thailand Post has commemorated Thai National Language Day on several occasions such as a set of 44 stamps in 2011 picturing each letter of the Thai alphabet. In the year 2015a set of ten stamps were issued showing Thai numerals from zero to nine.
