Stauracius became Emperor

Stauracius was Byzantine Emperor from 802 to 811. He declared Emperor on 26th July 811, after his father, Nikephorus killed in the battle of Pliska. Having been disabled in the Battle of Pliska, Stauracius was unable to exercise his power. His weakness brought forth a power struggle that eventually removed him from power.Staurakios reign was short, on 2nd October 811; he was usurped by his brother in law, Michael I Rangabe. He was sent to live in a monastery, where he stayed until he died gangrene in 812.
The above shown coin was issued his reign from Constantinople mint. The obverse of a coin depicts crowned facing bust of Nicephorus, wearing mustache and short beard, chlamys pinned at right shoulder, cross potent in right hand, akakia in left. On the other hand, the reverse of a coin has crowned facing bust of Stauracius, beardless, chlamys pinned at right shoulder, globus cruciger in right hand, akakia in left.
