65th Infantry Regiment Remembered On A Gold Medal

On April 13th, the 65th Infantry Regiment, known as the Borinqueneers, was awarded the Congressional Gold medal. It was the last segregated unit of the U.S. military which served for World War II and Korea.

The obverse depicts a fictional Borinqueneer staff sergeant with three soldiers in an inverted strategic “V” formation in the background and the crossed rifles insignia in the foreground. Inscriptions include ‘65th INFANTRY REGIMENT’ and ‘BORINQUENEERS’.

The reverse depicts the Castillo de San Felipe del Morro of San Juan, Puerto Rico, the preferred military command ceremonial parade site of the regiment. Inscriptions include ‘HONOR ET FIDELITAS’, ‘1899-1956’, ‘WORLD WAR I’, ‘WORLD WAR II’, ‘KOREAN WAR’, and ‘ACT OF CONGRESS 2014’.
