Railways are considered as one of the most important transportation in India. It is also considered as one of the fastest means of transportation which is commonly used by a common people, it a cost-effective means of transport, carry goods carriages for both short and long distances.
Today on this in 1853 at 3.35 pm, the first ever passenger train in the country departed from Bori Bunder to Tanna (Thane). It took 57 minutes to complete the journey of 34 km. This train was run with 14 railway carriages and with 400 guests. The three locomotives that pulled the first passenger train were named Sahib, Sindh, and Sultan.
To mark the 150th anniversary of India’s first train journey which falls in 2003, the Department of Posts tries to capture the spirit of the event with the issues of this commemorative stamp with the value of 1500 Paise.
