2017-06-14 Wed

The silver commemorative coins of 1892 to 1954 are popular among collectors but are not really rare. Three rare coins of this variety were recently sold for an impressive amount. Heritage Auctions sold a 1926 American Independence Sesquicentennial Half Dollar, MS-66+ (Star), CAC sticker for $32,900 in Chicago. Over 1 million such coins were struck but most of them were melted as the demand was not that great. Finally a total of 141,120 coins were minted.

The obverse depicts George Washington and President Calvin Coolidge. There are marks mostly on Washington’s cheek. MS 65 and finer examples of these coins are very rare. The coin offered at the auction has an interesting appeal and is the finest known of this type.
