In 2011, Cameroon issued a peculiar coin with a face value of 1000 francs which depicted a butterfly. The Papillons Exotique coin depicts a beautiful 3-D butterfly, the ‘Charaxes Forumierae’ also known as the brush-footed butterfly. The butterfly’s wings rise gracefully out of the coin to make it look almost alive. Made of .925 silver, the coin weighs 25 grams, measured 38.61 mm in diameter, and is of Proof quality.

The obverse of the coin depicts Cameroon’s Coat of Arms, the denomination ‘1000 Francs’ and the inscription ‘Republique Du Cameroun’. The reverse of the coin showcases the 3-D butterfly with its wings rising above the coin and the inscription, ‘Papillon Exotique’. The coin has a mintage of 2500 pieces.
