The Earliest And The Rarest: The First Islamic Gold Coins

2015-12-14 Mon

Some of the earliest and the rarest Islamic Gold coins were issued only a few decades after the prophet’s death. These coins narrate the story of how one of the largest and most influential empires of the world was created by early Muslims. These coins bear no Christian symbols even though they closely resemble Byzantine gold solidi of the early 7th century CE. On closer inspection, one can see the subtle differences which were introduced when the Muslims struck their first coins. Although devoid of Christian symbols, these early Muslim coins were circulated simultaneously along with Byzantine coins. They were among the first Islamic coins to have been minted and are extremely rare.
