In the First World War, airplanes were used for the first time as a significant part of the military. The airplane was used invented by the Wright brothers in 1903. By the end of the First World War, aircraft became important and inseparable from that time onwards in warfare.

The Fokker Eindecker airplane was used for the first time against the Allies by the German. Ace fighter pilots were portrayed as modern soldiers. Initially, the British relied largely on the French aircraft industry. By the war's end, the British had formed the world's first air force to be independent of either army or naval control, the Royal Air Force.

Surveillance was the first used airplane in the First World War. It was used to determine the enemy’s movement and position. Pilots and engineers learned from experience, developing many specialized types, including fighters, bombers, and trench strafers. Later, it was used to drop bombs on enemies or at their strategic locations.
