Classic Inverts Sold at the Regency-Superior Philatelic Auction in St. Louis

A stamps and postal history auction was held on 14th, 15th May by Regency-Superior Auctions of St. Louis, Mo.United States, British and worldwide singles and sets, like classic U.S. stamps and proofs, plate blocks, sheets, errors, postal stationery, revenues, stampless covers and state postal history, first-day cover singles and collections, etc were sold at the auction. A lot of Chinese and German collectibles were also sold at the auction.
Two U.S. stamps with inverted centres, the 1869 15¢ brown and blue type II Landing of Columbus (Scott 119b) and the 1901 4¢ brown and black Pan-American Automobile stamp, were the stars at the event. The 1869 stamp has a fine centring with a light cancel, especially on the vignette. The inverted centre is visible with a light strike of the cancellation marking. The stamp was auctioned with an estimate of $18,000.
The Third Assistant Postmaster General Edwin C. Madden had made a special request to print two sheets of 200 4 cent Pan-American Inverted stamps. They have a fine centring, with a small repair and reperforated at top. The original gum is present but disturbed. This stamp was listed with an estimate of $18,000.
The 1930 2¢ carmine rose General von Steuben stamp is imperforate from one pane of 100, making a block of four very rare. This block was offered with a $7,000 estimate. The top pair is highly hinged with the bottom pair mint never hinged.
Many other error stamps were auctioned at the event.
