Gold Four and a Half Masha of Chandellas of Jejakabhukti
2019-11-28 Thu
The Chandellas of Jejakabhukti was a royal dynasty in Central India; they ruled this region from the 9th Century to 13th Century CE. The Chandellas were the feudatories of Gujara-Pratiharas of Kanyakubja (Kannauj). The Chandellas are best known for their art and architecture; their best-known specimen temples at their original capital Khajuraho; a Hindu and Jain temple in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh. They also commissioned several temples, water bodies, palaces and forts at other places, including their strongholds of Ajaigarh, Kalinjar and their later capital Mahoba.Talking about their coinage not many varieties are seen. So far we have come across a very common series depicting a seated goddess Lakshmi on obverse and Nagari legend on the reverse. There are other few varieties than these too.
This gold 4 ½ Masha which weighs around 4.08g was issued by Sallakshana Varman of Chandellas of Jejakabhukti. The obverse of this coin depicts seated goddess Lakshmi. The reverse of this coin depicts Devanagari legend Srimat Sa/Lakshana Va/rmana Deva in three lines.
