Silver Drachma of Rashtrakutas

The Rashtrakutas were the ancient royal dynasty which had ruled the large part of the Indian subcontinent between 6th and 10th century. The word Rastra is derived from the Sanskrit word which means region and the word Kutas means Chieftains. Before being a ruling dynasty they were Chieftains. After coming to the power they had contributed a lot towards art and architecture which was unique during their period. The Rashtrakutas were the great patrons of art and architecture and they were also great builders.This very rare silver drachma which weighs around 0.43g was issued by Rashtrakutas in the name of Gunatunga. The obverse of this coin depicts the bust of the king facing towards the right. The reverse of this coin depicts ’Shri Gunatunga’ in Brahmi.
