Jagadish Chandra Bose was an Indian scientist, one of the fathers of radio science, and inventor of Crescograph; a device for measuring plant growths. He is considered as the father of Bengali science fiction.Born on 30th November 1858 in Mymensingh (Bangladesh), Bose graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta. However, he is most remarkably known for his pioneering discoveries in plant physiology. Using his known invention the crescograph, he proved that it is possible to measure plant response to various stimuli, and thereby scientifically proved parallelism between animal and plant tissues proving the existence of feelings in plants.
He made remarkable progress in his research of remote wireless signaling and was the first to use semiconductor junctions to detect radio signals. His achievements were commemorated all over the world in different ways. He was awarded the title of Sir by British Government.
India Postal Department has issued a 15 Naya paisa stamp in the year of 1858 celebrating the 100th Birth Anniversary of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose.
